Milton Erlin Foreman, age 76, of Belvidere, passed away on April 3, 2005, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip, after a long-fought battle with cancer.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 7, at the Belvidere Presbyterian Church with Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating.

Music will be provided by Syd Iwan, organist, and Kim Foreman, vocalist. Ushers are Tom and Don DeVries.

Rush Funeral Chapel of Kadoka is in charge of the arrangements.

Patricia N. “Pat” Jensen, age 75, died on March 9, 2005. Services were held Saturday, March 12, at the Faith Lutheran Church in Victorville, CA, with Rev. Daniel Morris officiating.

Pat was born September 14, 1929, at Pierre, SD, and moved to Torrance, CA, in 1945. In 1999, she moved to Spring Valley Lake, Victorville, CA.

She was a devoted mother to her seven daughters and a loving wife to her husband, Charles, for over 45 years.

Mary J. Ankrum, age 73, of Philip, died Friday morning, April 1, 2005, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital.

Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Tuesday, April 5, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Philip with Father Ron Garry as celebrant and Father Tim Hoag as con-celebrant.

Lector was Jerry Rhodes. Music was provided by Marianne Frein, organist, and Maureen Palecek, vocalist. Altar servers were Brynn Coyle and Carrie Buchholz. Ushers were Lloyd Frein and Mike Gebes.

What began as accepting a casual invitation to experience what trap shooting was all about has grown to become a family hobby.

Tom and Mary Parquet and their daughter, Kristi, are now regular competitors in league and in registered trap shooting ... to the point that the family shot just over 12,000 shells last summer. Still, that is little compared with one South Dakota competitive shooter who fired 13,200 shells in 2004, just in competition.

I love to fish. At least I think I do. I have children, so I don’t remember any more. Kids do that to a person ... about more than just fishing.

Way back in BC (before children) I caught panfish that were too big for the pan. I could smell frying trout even before the lure hit the water. I remember a day ending as the sun hit the horizon, just as the largest bass I ever caught hit the popper that I had plopped expertly next to a submerged stump ... on 10 lb. line ... and it was THIS big.

The last thing that I actually fished out of the lake was my daughter.

For the second year, Mike Noteboom will be hosting the “Local Dirt Track Racers Car Show.” From 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, Les’ Body Shop parking lot will be filled with around 14 cars that can make any lead-footed, white-knuckled driver drool. Bring your camera so you can have a picture taken in front of the dirt track race car of your dreams.

Racers from the Philip area will gladly answer questions about the cars and about dirt track racing. The sport is one that requires a car, skill, and an overpowering desire for adrenaline.

The world-renowned violinist Rasma Lielmane will be performing a concert in Philip. The concert will be open to the public and will be held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Philip at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 14.

The sponsor for the event is the First National Bank of Philip. This will be the third concert performed in Philip by Lielmane. The piano accompanist will be Gints Berzins, a Latvian musician renowned in his own right. The two have a busy concert schedule; in Sturgis on the 13th, Philip the 14th, Minneapolis the 16th, Chicago the 17th ....

The Philip Livestock Auction hosted a fundraiser for R-CALF USA on Tuesday, April 5, at which R-CALF USA Director Herman Schumacher spoke on behalf of the organization. They will host a second event is slated for 1 p.m. MDT on Tuesday, April 12.

Paul Slovek, and his son, Casey Slovek, both of Philip, donated a calf for the rollover auction on April 5. Glen Bennett of Philip will donate a calf for the benefit on April 12.

Everyone who donates at least $50 will receive a one-year membership to R-CALF USA.

On January 10, R-CALF USA filed a lawsuit in U.S.

Building maintenance and improvements were the larger part of the scheduled Haakon School District #27-1 board meeting on Monday, March 15.

The board’s building committee recently toured the country schools. The unused Plum Creek school building is in terrible condition. If the building were needed again, renovating it would cost more than bringing in a mobile unit as a replacement. The old building was voted to be surplused and will be offered at auction.

The other country schools are in excellent shape.

The Philip Chamber of Commerce held its monthly meeting Monday, March 14, at The Steakhouse with approximately 25 members present.

Chamber President Glenn Parsons welcomed members then informed them that the Community Assessment teams will be assigned chairpersons, who will then be contacting Chamber members to set up future meetings. Assessment teams are Housing, Beautification, Library, Recreation/Community Center, Signage and Business Development.
