The School Board for the Haakon School District #27-1 spent last Monday inspecting the country schools, interviewing for a school superintendent for next school year, and conducting a scheduled school board meeting.

The annual country school inspection tour was predictably informative. The buildings and properties were noted. The teachers did have the opportunity to show off the students and the teaching programs.

The interviewing for a new superintendent will be an ongoing process until the right candidate is found. The position will then be offered to that candidate.

“Philip is a proud community, and rightly so.”

Ted Haeder of the Community Assessment team said this to start the list – a long list – of strengths already visible concerning the community of Philip.

Haeder is a planner/project manager with the South Dakota Department of Tourism and State Development of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development. He was joined by Lynn Jensen, State Director of the U.S.

Evelyn Livermont, age 80, of Pierre, SD, formerly of Rapid City and Wanblee, passed away on Saturday, October 16, 2004, at Mary House Nursing Home in Pierre, surrounded by her family.

Private family services were held Tuesday, October 19, at St. Mark's Cemetery in Rockyford, SD. Rush Funeral Chapel of Philip was in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn Steele was born June 12, 1924, at her family's home near Rockyford, SD, the daughter of Asa and Winnie (Shangreaux) Steel. She grew up and attended schools in Wakpala and Pine Ridge, SD.

Exploding into the first quarter, the Scotties still had 11:02 on the clock when John Hart intercepted a pass and ran the ball in for a touchdown. The extra point attempt by Ty Fees was good.

Six minutes later, Dana Kerns passed 25 yards to Brit Miller for another touchdown. The extra point attempt failed. The Tigers fought back with less than a minute on the clock when Clinton Osterbur let loose a 77 yard pass to Travis Krogman for the touchdown. The Tiger extra point attempt failed.

The second quarter belonged to the Scotties.

The Philip Scotties’ volleyball team played at the Lead Triangular on October 5.

The first competition, versus the Lead Golddiggers, required all five games to determine the best three out of five.

Philip at Eagle Butte

The Scottie cross country team traveled to Cheyenne Eagle Butte on Tuesday, Oct. 5, to compete in the C.E.B. Invitational and Three Rivers Conference Champion-ships. Both races are scored during the one meet.

Our first race was the girls’ varsity. Thirty-one runners started. This is an “A” Division race, so all six girls ran varsity today. Early in the race, Maggie Coyle led the Scotties with Jackie Smith directly behind her in 15th and 16th places. Katie Coyle followed in 22nd place.

After almost disbanding several years ago, the Philip Health Services Auxiliary has grown to include 58 active members and 20 official sponsor members.

Coinciding with the creation of the new hospital, the membership and activities multiplied. A $10,000 pledge toward construction of the hospital has already been paid in full. The “woman of the prairie” wood carving in front of the Silverleaf Assisted Nursing Home was commissioned and completed.

Dr. Clark Duchene is the new visiting specialist at the Philip Clinic.

Duchene performs general orthopedic surgery and specializes in sports medicine. His hours will be from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. With a full schedule in Rapid City at the Black Hills Orthopedic and Spine Center, Duchene’s only outreach is the Philip Clinic.

His parents were originally from Highmore and he still has relatives there.

Jeanne Hunt, age 76, of Philip, died Tuesday morning, October 12, 2004, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

Memorial services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 16, at the United Church in Philip, with Pastor Mark Ford officiating. Music will be provided by Barb Bowen, organist, and Maureen Palecek, vocalist. Ushers will be Kieth Smith and Chuck O’Connor.

Interment will be at a later date at Black Hills National Cemetery.
