Marlene E. Moland was carried to heaven in the arms of Jesus on July 11, 2004, after a short battle with cancer, at her home in Huson, MT, surrounded by her family.

She was born in Philip, SD, on November 10, 1928, to Harry and Melissa Fay (Waldron) Curtis. She grew up northeast of Milesville, SD, and completed high school in Eagle Butte, SD.

On June 7, 1947, she married Leif Moland at Pierre. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June, 1997. The couple lived in Kansas while Leif served in the army.

If you’ve traveled Interstate 90 or Highway 14 this past week, you may have noticed a lot of bicyclists. Two tours have passed through the area, making stops in New Underwood, Wall and Philip.

Thirty-three riders with America by Bicycle passed through earlier in the week. The group stopped in New Underwood Tuesday before staying the night in Wall.

New members Vonda Hamill, Craig Hanrahan and Bill Slovek took the oath of office at the July meeting of the Haakon School Board on Tuesday. The board chose Hanrahan as their president and Matt Reedy as vice president.

Hanrahan had come prepared, with several issues he wanted to address already on the agenda.

In the course of approving their annual designations, board member Kelly Blair noted when approving The Pioneer Review as the official newspaper that the newspaper had made an error when reporting on the opt out effort.

This year’s Annual Meeting of Golden West Telecommunications Cooperative scheduled for Saturday, September 25th in Wall, SD will find the terms of four directors expiring on the Cooperative’s 13-member board of directors.

Terms expiring this year include the those of incumbent Directors Robert Hansen of Howes in District I, Duane Wood of Faith in District I, Richard Baye of Philip in District II, and Wayne Merrill of Hot Springs in District V.

Bird J. Patterson, age 100, of Kadoka, died Monday, July 5, 2004, at the Kadoka Care Center.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, July 9, at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Kadoka, and one hour preceding the services at the church on Saturday.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 10, at the Presbyterian Church in Kadoka, with John Kaiser officiating. Ushers will be Preston Patterson and Colter Carlson.

Helen A. O’Connor, age 98, of Capa, died Monday evening, January 5, 2004, at the Philip Nursing Home.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 9, at St. William’s Catholic Church in Midland, with a rosary and prayer service at 7:00 p.m.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 10, at St. William’s Catholic Church in Midland.

Interment will be in the Midland Cemetery.

Lola M. Smith, age 85, of Kadoka, formerly of Sioux Falls, died Saturday, July 3, 2004, at the Kadoka Nursing Home.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, July 8, at 1:00 p.m at the Kadoka Cemetery with Pastor Ann Schlossnagle officiating.
