Descendents of Harris Howard and Grace Williams gathered at the Triangle Ranch homestead over the weekend to celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of the ranch.

The occasion also marked the sixtieth wedding anniversary of Jess and Velma Williams and the thirty-fifth anniversary for Kenny and Lyndy Ireland.

Jess Williams is one of the three surviving members of the third generation of the Williams family and Lyndy (Williams) Ireland is a member of the fourth generation.

Two separate traffic accidents Monday required LifeFlight services from Rapid City Regional Hospital.

According to Haakon County Sheriff Larry Hanes, the call came in about 8:50 a.m. for a rollover accident four miles east of Philip.

A Chrysler LeBaron hatchback had rolled over and both of the two occupants were injured. Hanes said the Jaws of Life were used to get the doors off the vehicle.

One victim was Life-Flighted from the scene and the second was transported to Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital.

Philip Festival Days, scheduled for August 6-7-8, is being held this year in conjunction with the annual Haakon/Jackson County Fair.

Activities planned at the county fair include 4-H and open class exhibits, stick horse rodeo, tractor pedal pull, Kiss the Cow Contest, an ice cream social and talent show, to name a few.

“Putting kids first in education” was the theme of a Town Meeting in Philip hosted by Governor Mike Rounds and his staff.

School district patrons attending last Thursday’s meeting got a lesson on school district funding from the governor.

Rounds said he would present some figures, and then take questions from the audience. “We’re here to learn,” he said. “We’re here to learn what’s going right and what’s not.”

The first figures Rounds presented were demographic. Census figures show the population in the state growing older.

Alice Virginia Bowman of Velva, ND, formerly of Belle Fourche, SD, passed away on July 17, 2004, in a Minot, ND, hospital.

Services will be held Thursday, July 22, at 10:00 a.m. at the Christian Life Center in Belle Fourche with interment to follow.

Alice was born on January 14, 1935, in Batesland, SD. She was the fourth of six children born to Fay and Annette (Lathrop) Coleman.

The Coleman family moved to the Philip area when she was a young child. Alice graduated from Quinn High School in 1953.

Emory Philip Herring, 91, Sturgis, died Monday, July 12, 2004, at his home in Sturgis.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 15, 2004, at the First Wesleyan Church in Sturgis with Pastor Dwight Peterson officiating. Burial with military honors was in the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Emory was born August 13, 1912, at Ottumwa, SD, to Elza and Matilda (Berg) Herring. His family lived at Philip, SD, before moving to Piedmont in 1928. Emory graduated from Piedmont High School in 1931.

Dolores M. Thomas, age 72, of Kadoka, died Saturday morning, July 17, 2004, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Services were held Wednesday, July 21, at the Presbyterian Church in Kadoka with Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating.

Music was provided by Jean Weller, pianist, and Susan Davidson, vocalist. Ushers were Bruce Madsen and Paul Briggs. Pallbearers were Mike, Greg, Andrew, Dan and Philip Thomas and Wib Osborn.

Interment was in the Kadoka Cemetery. Rush Funeral Chapel of Kadoka was in charge of the arrangements.

Services for Ethel Sowards, age 66, of Pierre, who died Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at St. Mary’s TCU in Pierre, were held Saturday, July 17, at Isburg Funeral Chapel in Pierre. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery.

Ethel Schilling was born December 29, 1937 to Richard “Dick” and Elizabeth “Betty” (Jones) Schilling in Haakon County.
