The Bad River Open Golf Tournament attracted only thirty-eight golfers this last weekend. Of these, only nine were local players. The Great Plains Native American Golf Association (GPNAGA) hosted the three day event on the Lake Waggoner Golf Course.

The District Five Farmers Union will sponsor Estate Planning Services' popular seminar "Five Pillars of Estate Planning" at the Philip Senior Center on Saturday, September 4, at noon. Randy McKee of Black Hawk and his wife Carol present workshops to civic organizations and private groups all over the region. The workshop is free.

The Philip Fire Department has 42 members led by Marty Hansen and Roger Williams. When an emergency call comes in to the Philip Police Station, ten phones around Philip ring. A 911 call goes through Rapid City first, but is just as fast. Usually Marty or Roger are the ones to sound the whistle and initiate pagers. An estimated dozen or more volunteers quickly arrive, ready for anything. If the situation requires more volunteers, the whistle keeps blowing and almost everyone is soon present and accounted for.

The scheduled Haakon County School Board meeting drew a dozen citizens, most of them interested in the geo-thermal agreement section of the agenda.

Six businesses and the fire hall use the school’s surplus heating energy. Barium chloride is used to take radon out of the hot water before it is used to heat the school buildings. Barium chloride has increased in price. Testing the water for radon is an on-going requirement and expense. The underground water flow has slightly decreased, thus lowering the energy potential.

Just when they thought they had all the problems solved, a new problem with a new grader came along.

The Haakon County Commissioners took possession of two new graders just a couple of months back, and one has been taken back to Butler Machine for the second time. Alex Kuleza, Butler’s representative, reported to the commissioners at their August 10 meeting. He said the first time the grader was in was for a failed seal in the transmission. They thought it had come partially out during assembly at the factory. The replaced seal has now done what the first one did.

What they may not know is that one of his recent projects was a big one. Brucklacher has built a bridge across the Bad River at his place west of Philip. We’re not talking about a footbridge, either. It is seventy feet long and sturdy enough to drive a vehicle across, although he hasn’t driven his tractor across it yet.

This picture of the 1911 Philip High School Baseball Team is among the many pictures at the Friends of West River Museum located in Philip. Team members were: Forrest Diehl, George Hausman, Alfred Storms, Dave Chapman, Lavern Church, Magnus Hyde, Leon Ince, Earl Dorothy, Joseph Urban, and Frank Urban (in no particular order). The photo was taken March 13, 1911, and made into a postcard. Hildred Diehl donated it to the museum.

Daniel B. Stout died Saturday night, July 31, 2004 at St. Mary's Healthcare Center in Pierre.

Memorial services were held Thursday, Aug. 5, at the Presbyterian Church in Onida with Pastor Gary Walters officiating. Arrangements were with the Rush Funeral Chapel in Philip.

Daniel Benjamin Stout, better known as Dan to his family and friends, was born January 15, 1938 at Kadoka, SD, the son of Roy and Mary (Humphreys) Stout.

Dan grew up on a farm-ranch 11 miles west of Kadoka, graduating from Kadoka High School in 1956.

Dan was united in marriage to Janet R.

Mildred Kelly, age 93, of Rapid City, and formerly of Quinn, died Sunday, August 8, 2004, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday, August 11, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Wall with Father Leo Hausmann as celebrant.

Interment was in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Quinn, SD. Rush Funeral Chapel of Wall was in charge of the arrangements.

Mildred D. Miner was born at her parents’ home at Hermosa, SD, the daughter of William Vance and Margaret (Edwards) Miner.
