Dr. Clark Duchene is the new visiting specialist at the Philip Clinic.

Duchene performs general orthopedic surgery and specializes in sports medicine. His hours will be from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. With a full schedule in Rapid City at the Black Hills Orthopedic and Spine Center, Duchene’s only outreach is the Philip Clinic.

His parents were originally from Highmore and he still has relatives there.

Jeanne Hunt, age 76, of Philip, died Tuesday morning, October 12, 2004, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

Memorial services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 16, at the United Church in Philip, with Pastor Mark Ford officiating. Music will be provided by Barb Bowen, organist, and Maureen Palecek, vocalist. Ushers will be Kieth Smith and Chuck O’Connor.

Interment will be at a later date at Black Hills National Cemetery.

Helen J. Hanewinckel, age 83, of Wall, died Thursday morning, October 7, 2004, at the Good Samaritan Center in New Underwood.

Services were held Monday, October 11, at the First Lutheran Church in Wall, with Vicar Monte Dell officiating. Music was provided by Mary Kay Wilson, pianist, with congregational singing. Ushers were Van Simpfenderfer, Walt Schaefer, and Dick Johnson. Pallbearers were Bob and Bill Hamann, Mike Huether, Jeff Clark, Neil Lurz, and Nick Feller.

Interment was in the Wall Cemetery.

Pearl Edna Gerdon, age 93, of Belvidere, died Thursday morning, October 7, 2004, at the Kadoka Nursing Home.

Services were held Wednesday, October 13, at the Belvidere Presbyterian Church in Belvidere, with Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating. Music was provided by Syd Iwan, pianist, and Kim Foreman, vocalist.

Ushers were Tom and Don DeVries. Pallbearers were Lloyd Blom, Jim Kary, Rodney Foreman, Rick Dennis, Kelly Gerdon, Robert Ufen, and Gene Gerdon.

The Scotties had a good first quarter at the Timber Lake football game last Friday night, but the rest of the game was not as enjoyable.

Philip’s Dana Kerns ran for one yard to earn the first touchdown of the game, and the only touchdown of the first quarter. The extra point attempt failed.

The second quarter saw 35 points gained by Timber Lake. The third quarter saw eight more points for Philip, and six more points for Timber Lake. In the last quarter, Timber Lake gained another 14 points.

Philip vs. Lemmon

The Philip Scotties volleyball team hosted the Lemmon Cowgirls on September 30.

Four matches were played to determine the best three out of five. The end scores were 25-22, 25-9, 23-25 and 25-18.

Head coach for the Scotties is Kim Foley and the assistant coach is RaeAnn Snyder.

Philip at Lead Competition

The Philip Scotties competed in the Lead Annual Invitational Cross Country Competition at the Tomahawk Golf Course six miles south of Lead.

This was a varsity-only “A” Division race, thus giving three Scotties their first varsity competition in 2004. An “A” Division team consists of 6 runners; the first 4 are counters, while the next two are pushers to break any scoring ties. The lower the team score, the better. The first 15 places earn medals.

Franklin Willis Ogle went to be with his Savior on September 30, 2004, at the age of 82.

Memorial services were held Sunday, October 3, at the Kadoka Nursing Home, with Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating.

Graveside services with full military honors by the Sturgis Honor Guard were held Wednesday, October 6, at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with Chaplain Moe Greiner officiating.

Rush Funeral Chapel of Kadoka was in charge of arrangements.

Franklin Willis Ogle was born January 22, 1922 in Simeon, NE, one of nine children born to Charley and Jessie

Mildred Leone "Millie" Rust, age 84, of Kadoka, formerly of Murdo, died Wednesday morning, September 29, 2004, at the Kadoka Nursing Home.

Services were held Saturday, October 2, at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Murdo, with Pastor David A. Brinkmeyer officiating.

Music was provided by Karen Royer, organist, and Debbie Cressy, vocalist. Ushers were Monte and Guy Anker. Pallbearers were Matt Cressy, Cory and Cole Rust, Josh Penman, Justin and Lance Ivory.

Interment was in the Murdo Cemetery.

No major issues were before the Haakon County Board of Commissioners at their regular meeting Tuesday, October 5.

Kenny Neville, Highway Superintendent, reviewed events in his department. The board gave approval to Neville to purchase the 1997 Chevy pickup they had on trial from Federal Surplus in Box Elder.

He noted all FEMA work, except one area, is done. The last area involves downed trees that are in a wet location.
