The long trips to cross country meets are often spent sleeping or studying. On the last trip, no one slept and the only studies were recent race results. The Scotties worked on race strategies which would prove to be very successful. All seven varsity entries qualified for the 2004 State Cross Country Meet and all three junior varsity runners placed within the top six in their respective divisions.

The first races were the elementary runs which gave a glimpse of the future of cross country at Philip High School. Holly Iwan, fourth grader, raced in the girls’ run.

The Philip Scotties defeated the Jones County/Midland Rebels last Friday evening 22-12 in Murdo.

The first half was a freeze-out for the Rebels. With only 31 seconds left in the first quarter, the Philip Scotties got on the scoreboard when Brit Miller ran the ball the one yard needed for the first touchdown. The extra-point conversion was runin for a score of 8-0. With 4:57 remaining in the first half, Dana Kerns ran 47 yards for the Scotties’ second touchdown.

I hate the cold.

People think I’m weird when I soften up ice-cream in the microwave. I save money by drinking pop off the store shelf instead of from a pop machine. I dry my hands after de-hooking a fish, not for cleanliness but because the water is cold. One of my hobbies is hiking up hills because, hey, isn’t heat supposed to rise?

Winter has very few good points. I am a deadly shot with snowballs, then my hands freeze and my kids get revenge.

We write to encourage bi-partisan support for Amendment A authorizing merit selection of circuit judges and for retention elections.

If passed, Amendment A would require an evaluation process that will inform the public in advance of an election as to how a judge is performing in the office. A committee of respected judges and lawyers of this state have been charged with the responsibility of recommending an evaluation model.

Our state’s judges have to be independent, fair and impartial.

On October 5th, my wife and I were among several residents of the Philip area who attended a “Stand for the Family Rally” in Rapid City. This rally featured Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family. It was reported that there were nearly 7,000 there.

With a splash of history and color, hundreds of people witnessed the re-enactment of the meeting of the Plains Indians with Lewis & Clark Expedition at the mouth of the Bad River near Ft. Pierre. At the original meeting, 200 years ago, there were no television crews and national press to meet them, so details of that event have been in some dispute ever since.

The Expedition had been on the road awhile before it reached what is now Ft. Pierre, South Dakota, and, as they made their way up the Missouri River, it is alleged they encountered hostile Indians.

Min-Kota Fisheries, Inc., of Philip, South Dakota, will receive a grant of $12,500 from USDA Rural Development. The funds are awarded under the Value-Added Agricultural Product Market Development Program and will be used to evaluate the feasibility of marketing organically raised tilapia, a delicacy fish.

Rural Development Value-Added grants are offered to commodity producers who refine their products to increase their value.

"This research funding will help Min-Kota stay at the forefront of aquaculture," Senator Tom Daschle said.

The School Board for the Haakon School District #27-1 spent last Monday inspecting the country schools, interviewing for a school superintendent for next school year, and conducting a scheduled school board meeting.

The annual country school inspection tour was predictably informative. The buildings and properties were noted. The teachers did have the opportunity to show off the students and the teaching programs.

The interviewing for a new superintendent will be an ongoing process until the right candidate is found. The position will then be offered to that candidate.

Ted Haeder of the Community Assessment team said this to start the list – a long list – of strengths already visible concerning the community of Philip.

Haeder is a planner/project manager with the South Dakota Department of Tourism and State Development of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development. He was joined by Lynn Jensen, State Director of the U.S.
