March 24th, 1935 was a blissful day way back when; a day now to be especially honored by Floyd and Ruby Sammons of Midland on their 70th wedding anniversary. Marrying in Custer, living and working in many different places since, but now settled again in Midland, the Sammons have seen and experienced hard times and good times. They have done so together.

The two grew up in the Hermosa area and remember the “dirty 30s.” “You can’t realize how rough it can get, but our families made it through,” said Floyd. They agreed to get married and begin their own family.

David L. Moodie, 73, died Saturday, March 12, 2005 at Deaconess Hospital in Billings due to injuries sustained from an accidental fall the previous day.

David was born March 13, 1931 in Hewitt, Minnesota to Alexander and Agnes (Erickson) Moodie. He graduated from Herman High School and served in the Air Force from 1950 to 1954.

On September 10, 1954, he was united in marriage to Beverly Brunkow in Herman, Minnesota. They recently celebrated 50 years of marriage.

Dave’s father, Alex, founded Moodie Implement in 1932 in the Central Minnesota town of Hewitt.

Mike Durkin, 50, of Ft. Pierre, died Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

Services were held Friday, March 11, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Ft. Pierre with burial in Ft. George Cemetery.

Michael Lee Durkin was born on June 20, 1954, to Elmer and Rosella “Sally” (Bode) Durkin, in Pierre, SD.

He lived his whole life on the banks of the Missouri River, in an area often referred to as Fort George. He attended LaRoche Bottom country grade school and then graduated from high school at Marty Mission in 1972.

Bea Sumpter, 89, life long resident of Rapid City, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Wednesday, March 9, 2005, at her granddaughter’s home in Piedmont.

Bea enjoyed playing piano when she was young with her musical family.

Helen Berry, 91 of Pierre died Wednesday, March 9, 2005, at St. Mary’s TCU.

Memorial services were held Saturday, March 12, at the Madison Ave. Church of Christ.

Family committal was at Riverside Cemetery following the services.

Helen Berry, daughter of Bertha and Ernest Bottke was born on January 27, 1914, at her parents’ farm in Milesville, SD. She attended school in Milesville, Redfield and Rapid City.

She married Carl Berry on June 10, 1932.

Edna L. Buls, age 97, of Philip, died Wednesday, March 9, 2005, at the Philip Nursing Home.

Services were held Saturday, March 12, at the First Lutheran Church in Philip, with Pastor Ann Schlossnagle officiating.

Music was provided by JoAnne Stilwell, organist, and Elvera Moos, vocalist. Ushers were Dwight and Paul Slovek, Bob and Bill Thoson, Rod and John Knutson.

Interment was in the Masonic Cemetery. Rush Funeral Home of Philip was in charge of the arrangements.

Edna May Sherwood was born July 5, 1908, at Midland, SD, the daughter of Mervin and Fleta May (Weeks) Sherwood. She moved with her family to Philip in January 1918.

The Philip Lady Scotties faced off against long-time rivals the Kadoka Kougars in the second game of district tournament.

The evening before was a drain on energy and emotion, with an overtime win against the New Underwood Tigers. The Scotties still came out strong in the second game and scored the first four points. They also almost doubled the Kougars’ score at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter was a catch-up time for Kadoka.
