Moses Building Center closes its Kadoka lumber yard

"It just wasn't self-supporting anymore," said Mike Moses, owner of the Moses Building Center in Philip, of the lumber yard in Kadoka.

Three years ago, as of the first of March, Moses had purchased the Kadoka Lumber and Supply business from Jim Kujawa.


SD Attorney General Larry Long speaks in Philip

Information against con artists ... Mike West helps distribute free packets as South Dakota Attorney General Larry Long describes the most common types of scams and consumer fraud that are currently being worked on state citizens.

Larry Long admitted to his audience that he felt comfortable in the Philip area, since he grew up in nearby Martin and often visited Philip as a youngster, especially remembering playing baseball against Philip teams. He knows many local people, such as Mike West who introduced him to the crowd. The Philip AARP hosted Long's visit during the monthly Senior Center public luncheon on March 21st.

Long said that the Attorney General's office and its 150 employees use two-thirds of their time and budget for law enforcement.


Philip young wrestlers compete at the AAU state tournament

The Philip area was represented well by its AAU wrestlers who competed in the state tournament on March 24 to 25 at the Rapid City Civic Center.

Out of the growing number of area AAU members, seven local athletes had earned the right to go on to the state meet. Coaches Keven Morehart, Joe Carley and Randy Johnson saw five of these wrestlers earn places in the top eight spots in their respective age and weight divisions in South Dakota.

"It was an enjoyable season," said Morehart. "The kids worked hard.


Scottie athletes compete at Winner's Pistulka Track and Field Invitational

The Winner Track Meet (AKA Bill Pistulka Invitational) on Friday, March 30, was a cold day with many Philip athletes not able to compete because of other school functions.

The boys' team took 5th place overall, while the girls' team took 8th place.

"Overall the kids did quite well at Winner considering how cold it was," said Head Coach Jerry Rhodes.

The Philip Scotties competed at their first track meet of the 2007 season at the Bennett County Invitational meet in Mission on Saturday, March 24.

"Overall the meet went quite well," said Head Coach Jerry Rhodes. "We needed to get on a track and get some times and distances to see where we are and what we have to work on. I was pleased with the athletes and how they performed."

The boys' team has 26 members from grades seven through 12. The girls' team has 25 athletes out this season.

"I'm pleased with the numbers that we have," said Rhodes.

Philip Scottie golf season preview

Head coach Doug Hauk and members of his Scottie boys' and girls' teams have been practicing and are getting ready to start their 2007 golf season.

The Philip boys' golf team has 14 players. Two have state experience, Caleb Clements and Jordan Smith. Smith placed at the state tournament last year. Allen Hauk and Kolby Longbrake are returning as other members from last years varsity team.


Irvin S. Severson

Irvin S. Severson, age 95, of Kadoka, died Saturday, March 24, 2007, at the Kadoka Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, March 29, at the Presbyterian Church in Kadoka, with Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating.

Visitation will be held one hour preceding the services at the church on Thursday.

Interment will be at the Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery north of Murdo.

Irvin Severson was born to Andrew Severson and Celia (Mitchell) Severson on September 13, 1911, in Van Metre, SD.


Robert "Bud" Jeffries

Robert "Bud" Jeffries died Thursday, March 22, 2007, at the Belle Fourche Regional Senior Care Center.

Another old cowboy has been called home; he leaves behind some big boots to fill.

Services were held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, at the Pioneer Hall in Dupree, with Pastor Fay Garreau officiating.

Music was provided by Butch Samuelson, pianist, and Mitzi Hunt, vocalist. Ushers were Mark and Marvin Garrett.
