The Philip Amateur baseball team came up big, holding off a late inning rally, against 4-Corners, June 16, in Philip.

Philip scored early in what looked to be a big and quick win. Seven runs scored on five hits and one error in the second inning. Getting hits that inning were Chad Ramsey, Brad Heltzel, Jeremy Kerns, Jody Sudbeck, and Joel Spry. Dusty Snyder reached base on an error, Trace O’Connell was hit by a pitch and Matt Reckling walked.

Both teams were hurt by walks in the game, with half of the runners that were walked on both teams coming in to score later in the inning.

Young cowboys and cowgirls from around the state will gather in Huron for four days, from June 23rd to the 26th, of fierce competition in the South Dakota High School Rodeo Association's 56th Annual State Rodeo Finals. And on July 6 at 8 p.m. CT/ 7 MT, the rest of South Dakota can see the championship rounds on SDPB Television.

The Philip Volunteer Fire Department has been awarded the Outstanding Fire Service Award for 2005.

At the Annual State Fire School held June 9-11, and in front of over 700 attending firemen, representatives of the Keep South Dakota Green Association and the Rapid City Journal presented a plaque and a check for $150 to the Philip Fire Department. The plaque was created out of wood from the South Dakota Christmas tree that was displayed in Washington in 1997.

The city of Philip has been recommended for a grant of $11,500 from the Land and Water Conservation Fund. When approved by the National Park Service, these federal funds will be used to install playground equipment.

The June 20 Haakon School District 27-1 board meeting followed a farewell open house for business manager Marcia Jackson. It also followed an executive board session that had begun at 4:00 p.m.

As of July 1, Scott Brech will begin his one-year appointment as a member of the school board. Beginning on the same date, the new business manager will be Jackie Longbrake.

The high school English position will be filled by Laura O’Connor, who had been teaching in Hill City. The K-12 computer instructor will be Nancy Reimer. Barb Bowen will head all music: K-12 vocal and instrumental.

Carl Levi Snook, age 61, of Midland, died Saturday, June 11, 2005, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Christian funeral services were held Tuesday, June 14, at St. William Catholic Church in Midland, with Father Ron Garry officiating.

Music was provided by Barb Petoske, pianist, and Barb Jones, vocalist. Lector was Eleanor Zuccaro. Ushers were Jeff Willoughby and Mickey Daly. Pallbearers were Ronnie Sammons, Gene Jones, Dick Nemec, Shorty Jones, Chuck Zuccaro and Jerry Engelhaupt.

Interment was in the Midland Cemetery.

Elsie V. Grimes, age 81, of Kadoka, died Wednesday, June 8, 2005, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

Services were held Monday June 13, at the Presbyterian Church in Kadoka with Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating.

Music was provided by Jean Weller, organist, and Megan Kingsbury, pianist, with special music by Carl Bauman, John Kaiser and Boyd Porch. Ushers were Norman Amiotte, Kelly Fortune, Larry Beckwith and Orville Josserand.

Clarence Lilburn “Slim” Fugate, 98, Rapid City, died Tuesday June 7, 2005, at West Hills Health Care.

Services were held Friday, June 10, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Rapid City, with Rev. Bill Paepke officiating. Burial was at Mt. View Cemetery, Rapid City.

He was born Dec. 26, 1906, at Prentice, WI; to Hugh and Ibbie (Repass) Fugate. In 1910, he came with his parents to Nemo, SD, where he attended school until 1918 when he moved with his parents to Rapid City, where he lived until his death.

John H. "Johnny" Noteboom, age 83, of Philip, died Tuesday, June 7, 2005, at the Philip Nursing Home.

Services were held Friday, June 10, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Philip, with Pastor Robert Oettel officiating.

Music was provided by Marlis Doud, organist, and Rick and Marlis Doud, vocalists. Ushers were Todd Radway and Steven Stewart. Pallbearers were Dugan Stewart, Larry Smith, Rick King, Bob and Jack Hansen and Jerry Neville.

Interment was in the Masonic Cemetery in Philip. Rush Funeral Home of Philip was in charge of the arrangements.

Dorothy J. "Dottie" Olson, age 78, of Kadoka, died Sunday, June 19, 2005, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip, after a 14-year heroic battle with cancer. Her beloved husband of 55 years, three daughters, and their families were at her bedside.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 22, with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m., all at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Kadoka.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m.
