Lightning Artist Gallery

Lightning Artist Gallery in Faith, S.D., is holding their Grand Opening all this week. Terry and Diana Bottjen welcome you in for coffee, hot cider and cookies and register for prizes, and see what all they have to offer. BIG turnout for Bison Public Library Halloween party

Over 40 kids in costume came to have fun at the library Thursday after school, for the library’s first Halloween Party. The kids created scenes with the 10,000 Lego® piece kit that was recently added to the kids area,

Totton and others help senior center raise money

The Jones County Seniors for Service Center had their semi-annual Indian taco feed fundraiser. This year many people helped make the fundraiser a success, including Bob Totton who not only donated a star quilt for a raffle, but who also sold over $700 in raffle tickets for the fundraiser.

Nursing home treats

The Philip Nursing Home held its annual trick or treat event for young children on the afternoon of Oct. 31. The residents handed out candy as the costumed kids made the rounds in the cafeteria. Drinks and snacks were also offered. The many kids, and the residents, got their fair share of treats and visiting.

Scales and tails visit Philip

Reptile expert Henry Michaloski shows off Houdini, his red-tailed boa constrictor, to the Haakon elementary students. Michaloski used humor, musical ditties and audience participation to teach reptile terminology. Constantly using rhymes, ditties and sing-along actions, animal expert Henry Michaloski and his reptile menagerie entertained and educated Haakon elementary students in a special assembly, Thursday, Oct. 23, in the Fine Arts Building. His “scales and tails” presentation seemed to be as much fun for him as for his audience.

Scottie boys are cross country state champs!

The Philip Scotties brought home the 2014 boys’ State “B” Cross Country Meet first place team award, the girls’ ninth place recognition and the combined team runner-up spot. Four athletes earned medals for finishing in the top 20, the first time Philip has accomplished such a feat.

Louise Simmons

Louise Simmons, 79, Spearfish died Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.
Louise was born on July 14, 1935 in a car because it ran out of gas on the way to New Underwood to Leonard A. and Esther (Wilcoxsen) Jobgen. She grew up in Scenic, where she enjoyed the time spent with her cousins, Margaret and Donald.
