LaVonne O. Green

LaVonne O. Green, age 83, of Interior, SD, died Wednesday morning, August 2, 2006, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

Graveside services were held Saturday, August 5, at the Fairview Cemetery in Interior.

LaVonne O. Kruse was born on her parents' ranch in Conata Basin near Interior, the youngest of 14 children born to William and Lena (Schluter) Kruse.

City Council sees money coming in and going out

The Philip City Council's regular meeting on August 7th was financially based on many topics.

Under "old business," the additional fees requested from Wohlenberg, Ritzman, Co. have been dropped.

Haakon County Commissioners discuss aerial fire fighting options

With the high rate of wildfires occurring in the region, the Haakon County Commissioners took steps to help local fire fighting units in case a wildfire should threaten Philip.

Emergency Manager Lola Roseth and Roger Williams, assistant fire chief for Philip, presented information to the commissioners at their Tuesday, August 1, meeting regarding information gathered at a firefighters meeting in Faith. Williams explained that the county is eligible to participate in a program in which airplanes and helicopters can be accessed to fight wildfires.

Philip area youth attend Youth Gathering in San Antonio, Texas

Three years of fundraising bore fruit on July 12-17 when 39 area youth and leaders flew to San Antonio, TX, for a nationwide gathering of church young people.

Thirty-nine area people were registered for the 25,000 person sold-out event, the 2006 Evangelical Lutheran Church of America Youth Gathering.

Mike Albrecht, Becky Brech, Cynthia Finn, Mike Seager, Pastor Mark Ford and Nicole Nelson chaperoned the 27 young people from the Philip youth group, two from the Concordia Lutheran Church in Kadoka, and four from the Midland Lutheran Church.

Oelrichs' Chad Ferley riding high in saddle bronc standings

Fortified by a big win this past weekend at Salina, CA, Oelrichs cowboy Chad Ferley is riding high in the Professional Cowboys Associations' saddle bronc standings.

Ferley tied for top honors in the first go-round of his pet event at Salinas last week by scoring 83 points on Russell Rodeo' Fancy Pants and then won the title Sunday when he rang up a rodeo-best 86 on a South Dakota horse, Korkow Rodeo's Queeny.

Kirley Junior Shooters take ninth at Nationals

Members of the Kirley Junior Shooters traveled over 11,000 miles to compete in the International B-B Gun Competition Match. They left Haakon County on June 28 for Bowling Green, Kentucky, and returned on July 4, bringing with them the ninth overall place ... a place earned out of 253 shooters, representing 39 teams, representing 19 states.

Five team members and two alternates of the Kirley Junior Shooters earned the honor to go to Nationals: John Willoughby, Nick Neuhauser, Austin Briggs, Haley Hand, Chantel Norman, Avery Johnson and Wyatt Johnson.

Big or small issues, I learn how to treat aspects of my life through the direct and indirect influences of my children.

The politicians and powers-that-be should visit with my daughter. She was given a hand-me-down skirt. It was fairly new, white, stylish, fit well, and she liked it. I saw it on her for the first time. I closed my wide-open jaw so hard that I almost lost my tongue. That mini-skirt showed off my daughter's legs almost up to her armpits. Actually, back in college, I used to date girls who wore clothes like that. But, my daughter?!

Already time for school to start?

Registration for this year's academic classes at Philip High School for grades 7-12 will be from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 15-16, at the high school principal's office.

The three Fall sports will hold their first practices on Monday, August 14.

All athletes must have their physical forms on file in the high school office before their first practice. Forms are available at the high school office or online at www.philip.k12.sd.us.

A football parent/player meeting will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 13, in the high school gym.

Survey required for library grant

Haakon County is applying for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) through the Governor's Office of Economic Development and Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

The CDBG will partially fund a new county library with an annex attached to the existing courthouse which will contain handicap accessible restrooms compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

In order to be eligible for the grant, the Haakon County Friends of the Library will be conducting random telephone surveys in the evening hours during the week of August 7-11.
