Memorial services for Ruth Fairchild were held Monday, July 3, at the United Church in Philip with Pastor Mark Ford officiating.

Music was provided by Marilyn Millage, organist, and Elvera Moos, vocalist. Ushers were George Gittings and Ed Morrison.

Ruth Sherwood was born May 19, 1918, at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre, SD, the daughter of Mervin Curtis and Fleta May (Weeks) Sherwood.

Ruth grew up in Philip, attended Philip elementary school. She graduated valedictorian of her 8th grade class in 1933, and was the valedictorian of her 1937 high school class.

Ercell E. Albin, age 92, of Parkton, MD, formerly of Belvidere, SD, died Saturday, July 1, 2006, at her residence in Maryland.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m on Thursday, July 6, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Kadoka, with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m.

William Nelson "Bill" Grimm, age 68, of White River, died Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at the Rosebud Hospital in Rosebud, SD.

Services were held Tuesday, June 27, at the Community Events Center in White River with Pastor John Erickson presiding.

Music was provided by Lynda Bloom, “Amazing Grace” and “What A Friend We Have in Jesus”. Register book attendant was Naomi Grimm. Ushers were Nick Frank and Randy Borer. Pallbearers were Jim Fernen, Bill Piercy, Doug Holmes, Walt Lurz, Gene Popkes and Darrell Scott.

Gladys M. Gardner, age 78, of Ridgecrest, CA, formerly of Wall, SD, died Wednesday, June 21, 2006, at her home in Ridgecrest.

Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 29, at the United Methodist Church in Wall, with Pastor Brad Kattelmann officiating.

Music will be provided by Carol Hahn, organist, and Lucille Holsether, vocalist, singing “His Eye is on the Sparrow”, “Rock of Ages”, and “In the Garden”. Ushers are Bill Leonard and Bernard Foster.

Haakon County has been disapproved for Emergency CRP haying and grazing. The county could only show a 36 percent below normal loss of precipitation.

Kent Olson has been selected as the new CEO/Administrator of Philip Health Services, Inc. (PHSI) in Philip. He will assume his new duties at PHSI on July 17.

“We welcome Kent to Philip Health Services,” said Charles Ekstrum, Chairman of the PHSI board. “With Kent’s skills and knowledge, we’re confident he will contribute greatly to the Philip community.”

Rapid City Regional weighed “quite a few applications, finally presenting the top two for further interviewing by the PHSI directors and department managers,” said Kim Kanable of Philip Health Services.

Their place is a long-time family “home place” about 10 miles south of Midland, and their 20,000 acres stretch into Jackson County. They need to keep track of about 850 head of Black cattle – the white-faced Herefords seem to have faced away in most of the cowboy country now.

Walking into their living room is to experience a glow of South Dakota history.

A packed courthouse community room Monday, June 26, 2006, was the scene of a public hearing in regards to the Community Development Block Grant that Haakon County is applying for to help fund the proposed new library.

The public hearing was just one of many HUD requirements that have to be met to qualify for the CDBG. Other requirements include an income survey and an environment assessment.
